Tipster gets $1,000 for helping solve
sign-defacing crime
By PATRICK MALONE
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
An anonymous tipster who helped police solve a
crime that damaged a civic treasure received a
$1,000 reward from The Pueblo Chieftain on
Thursday. Crime Stoppers presented the reward.
Police said the newspaper's reward helped them
to solve the July 3 defacing of the “Home of
Heroes” sign that welcomes visitors to the city
as they arrive from the north on Interstate 25.
The moniker is a reference to Pueblo 's four
native sons who've received the Medal of Honor.
“I will credit the reward as being instrumental
in bringing out this information,” said Pueblo
Deputy Police Chief John Ercul. “There was good,
hard police work and follow-up investigation
that paid off. But we were put on the right
track by this source of information, who was
inspired by the reward.”
Police have arrested four 19-year-old men in
connection with the crime. Each has pleaded
guilty in municipal court, where Judge William
Alexander sentenced them to jail terms.
Ercul said the informant helped police to
identify and locate the suspects. |
